Briar Cliff Softball Drops Twin Bill to Glenville State

The Briar Cliff softball team continued its spring trip in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina today, dropping both games of a doubleheader with NCAA Division II Glenville State by scores of 5-3 and 2-1. The Chargers dropped to 2-11 on the season. Briar Cliff will complete its spring trip on Friday with games against Ohio Christian at 9:30 a.m. and Walsh University at 1:30 p.m.

Glenville State took the lead in game one in the bottom of the third inning with a run to go up 1-0. The Cliff quickly answered back with a run of its own in the top of the fourth inning when Emily Riha singled to left to score Codie Fineran and bring the score to 1-1. The Pioneers retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth with two runs but the Chargers again responded with two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game again at 3-3. Fineran singled to center field to score Nicole Romero for the first run of the inning and Brooke French then tripled to center to bring home Fineran. Glenville State then scored twice in the sixth inning and held the Charger bats scoreless to preserve the 5-3 win.

The Chargers outhit the Pioneers in the game 12-8 but were unable to convert that offense into enough runs for the win. Fineran paced the Blue & Gold in hits with three, followed by Romero, Summer Williams and French with two hits each. Isabella Gonzalez pitched 4.0 innings with four strikeouts and one walk and Abbygail Lint threw 2.0 innings with one K and one walk.

Game two was more of a pitchers dual with Williams throwing all seven innings for the Cliff and Ally Brown threw the entire game for Glenville State. Williams notched five strikeouts and walked only one batter while Brown had six K’s and zero walks. Briar Cliff was able to get on the scoreboard first in the game when Gonzalez singled to center field to score Danielle Ullmann and put the Cliff up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Unfortunately, that was the only run of the contest for BC as Glenville scored once in the sixth and the game-winning run in the seventh for the 2-1 win.

The Cliff had four hits in the game with Rachele Heaton, Williams, Gonzalez and Bailey Nichols all notching one hit.
