Briar Cliff’s softball team suffered a pair of losses in Sioux Center, Iowa on Wednesday against Dordt, including a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in eight innings in game one. The Chargers also fell to the Defenders 7-3 in game two. The losses dropped BC to 5-30 overall and 2-16 in the GPAC, while Dordt improved to 20-15 overall and 9-7 in conference play.
Dordt went up 1-0 in game one in the bottom of the first inning but the Cliff would even the game up in the top of the third at 1-1 when Codie Fineran drove in Bailey Nichols. The game would remain at 1-1 through seven innings but the Defenders were able to win in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the eighth when Hailey Heeringa doubled deep to right field to drive in Jennifer Kooiker for the game winning run.
Briar Cliff had five hits in the game with Nichols leading the Blue & Gold with two hits. Nicole Wiles, Summer Williams and Brooke French all had one hit. Isabella Gonzalez pitched a complete game in the loss.
In game two, the Defenders again took control early with one run in the first inning and they built a seven run lead with three runs in the third and three more in the fifth inning. The Chargers attempted to rally in the top of the seventh by scoring three runs. Emily Riha hit a single to right-center to score Nicole Romero and Lanae Shiley followed that up with a two run homer to score herself and Riha. Dordt then notched the final two outs of the game to preserve the 7-3 win.
BC piled up eight hits in the ballgame with Wiles and Gonzalez both recording two hits. Romero, French, Riha and Shiley all had one hit apiece and Shiley had a team-high two RBI. Summer Williams was tagged with the loss in the game after pitching 4.0 innings and notching two strikeouts and Abbygail Lint had one K in 2.0 innings.
Briar Cliff will finish its season on Saturday with a trip to Crete, Nebraska for a doubleheader against Doane. Game one of the conference tilt will begin at 1 p.m.
