Briar Cliff Women Outlast Bellevue

The Charger women’s basketball team outlasted the Bruins 60-58 this evening in Bellevue, Nebraska. The Bruins had opportunities to tie the score, but the Charger defense played tough and only allowed one shot in the final 1:08. Briar Cliff improved to 5-3 with the win, while Bellevue dropped to 6-5.

The game was back and forth with the score tied on seven occasions during the contest and featured five lead changes. Bellevue led 15-13 after the opening period and both teams were tied at 27 points apiece at the break. The Bruins took a 41-37 edge into the fourth quarter, but a 23-17 final period for the Chargers was enough to give BC the 60-58 victory. BU’s biggest lead was seven points with 4:33 left in the first half and BC’s largest lead was six points with 6:39 remaining in the game.

Briar Cliff hit 40.8 percent from the floor, 44.4 percent from deep and 80.0 percent from the free throw line. Comparatively, Bellevue was 41.8 percent from the field, 25.0 percent from distance and 61.5 percent from the charity stripe. The Bruins held the statistical advantage in rebounds (34-29), points in the paint (36-20), assists (18-15) and blocks (3-0). The Chargers earned the benefit in bench points (21-17), points off turnovers (20-18), second chance points (14-6), steals (11-10) and fast break points (9-4).

Johanna Vaske led the Blue and Gold with 15 points, trailed by Taylor Wagner netting 12 points. Marquel Harlan piled up nine points, Logan Ehlers threw down seven points and both Taylor Vasa and Faith Troshynski chipped in six points. Vaske had a near double-double with nine rebounds to go with her 15 points. Wagner dished out a team-high seven assists and created a team leading four steals.

Elexis Martinez was the top scorer for the Purple and Gold with 15 points, followed by Caletria Curtis notching 11 points. Shayla Dean and Beth Walker contributed 10 points apiece. Both Martinez and Walker shared the team lead in rebounds with eight boards each. Taylor Cormier had six assists, while Dean and Curtis led the team in steals with three each.

Briar Cliff will play Valley City State in the Dordt Classic on Friday. The Chargers and Vikings are slated for a 4 p.m. tip in Sioux Center, Iowa.
