Broncos and Lopers Set To Square Off

The University of Nebraska at Kearney will host the Broncos of Hastings College tonight and will look to duplicate their performance in last year’s matchup as UNK won 93-64. This rivalry game will be another good battle as the Lopers enter this game at 4-5 and the Broncos at 11-4.

Hastings College is an NAIA school and they are coming off of a 99-63 win over Tabor College last night. This team is prolific on offense as they average 85 points per game. Hastings shoots a high percentage from the field as well at 47%. From deep, they shoot at 36%, which will be a high clip that UNK will try to slow down. On defense, it has been a bit of a struggle as they allow 70 points per game and are shooting 44%. Teams have been able to exploit the long ball as opponents have made 147 threes against them.

Hastings has been led by a pair of players that average 19 points per game. Senior Kevin Miller and Bart Hiscock have been leading the Broncos this year and they both score in similar fashion. Miller has hit 25 threes and shoots 48% from deep. Hiscock has hit 23 three-pointers but he is only shooting 32% from distance.  Hiscock does a great job on the glass too, pulling down nine rebounds per contest. Slowing down those two athletes will be key for the Lopers, which is much easier said than done.

For UNK, they are coming off of a win on December 9th against Mount Marty by a final score of 79-69. UNK has continued to try and find their way this season as on offense they are only scoring 69 points per game and they allow 73 points per game. But, recently this young this team has been playing great ball against some strong competition. The team’s shooting percentage has improved as now they are shooting at a 43% clip.

Kanon Koster continues to show off his talent as he averages 17 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Koster has shown that even as a freshman, he can be a go-to player. Fellow freshman Henry Penner has done a nice job being inserted into the starting lineup. His season totals are hovering around nine points per game and he’s hit 17 three-pointers and shooting 46% from long range.

UNK and Hastings will tip-off at 7 P.M. with pregame starting at 6:45 P.M. on 93.1 The River.
