Chargers Put Out Comets in Straight Sets

The Briar Cliff women’s volleyball team swept Mayville State 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-16) Monday evening in Mayville, North Dakota. The victory improves the Chargers to 9-8 overall, while the Comets drop to 9-12 on the season.

Briar Cliff outhit Mayville State .301-.106 with the Chargers earning 48 kills and 17 errors off 103 attacks, compared to 32 kills and 21 errors off 104 attacks for the Comets. BCU led in the statistical categories of kills (48-32), assists (45-27), digs (51-38), blocks (9-4) and service aces (5-1).

Katelin Langel led the Cliff with 12 kills, followed by Emily Sanburg and Courtney Schafer with 9 kills apiece and Teerstyn Johnson with 7 K’s. Laura Barry and Delaney Meyer shared the setting duties with Barry notching 22 assists and Meyer dishing out 20. Defensively, the Chargers were led by Breanne Hankins with 16 digs and Megan Lee with six digs.  Nicolette Lavulo was the best force at the net defensively, earning four blocks. Katie Berg created two service aces in the contest, while Sanburg, Barry and Hankins each contributed a service ace.

Joely Christianson had the most kills for the Comets with 11, followed by Hannah Bliss with six. Megan Kolness accounted for 21 assists and TaLise Hansen led the way defensively piling up 16 assists. Kolness led Mayville State with two blocks in the contest. Jayden Warner contributed the lone Comet service ace of the evening.

Briar Cliff will now turn their attention to Dakota Wesleyan. The Chargers and Tigers are set to square off on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m in the Newman Flanagan Center.
