Conference Play Begins For UNK Women’s Basketball Team

Conference Play Begins For UNK Women’s Basketball Team

After a 5-2 start to the 2018-2019 basketball campaign, the University of Nebraska Kearney Women’s Basketball Team will begin conference play in the prestigious MIAA. UNK will begin league play against a pair of top 25 teams.  The gauntlet begins tonight against 10th ranked Forth Hayes State.

The Tigers are 6-0 on the season and haven’t had a game within 12 points so far this season. Under the direction of head coach Tony Hobson, in his 11th year, the Tigers do a lot of things very well.

As mentioned before, this team hasn’t had very many close games. They average 84.5 points per game while allowing 51.3 on the defensive side of the ball. This squad is also shooting 41.5 % from the field. A key indicator for this team also is their ability to maintain the rock. So far this year they are only averaging 10.2 turnovers per game.

The interesting thing for this Tiger team also is that they have a committee scoring effort. Junior Lanie Page leads the way averaging 13.3 points per game.  Fellow junior Kacey Kennett is second on the team in scoring at 12.5 points per game. The final scorer that averages double figures is senior Tatyana Legette at 10.7 points per game. For UNK to have success, they will have to figure out how to limit this trio. UNK will be on the road as that will be another challenge for them.

Emporia State will follow the Tigers as they will play in the Health in Sports Center against the Lopers on Thursday. The Hornets are 6-1 this season and playing good basketball. Their lone loss came on November 19th against Cameron University, 86-72.

This team also hasn’t had very many close games thus far as they are averaging 77.3 points per game while allowing just 62.6 points per game. They are shooting a very strong clip at 43.6% from the field. Also, from three-point range, this squad shoots 38.8%.

They are led by Jessica Wayne, a junior guard that averages 14.6 points per game. Graduate transfer Addie Lackey has been a nice addition to this team as she averages 12.3 points per game while shooting 49.3% from the field and 41% from deep. Those two will be the key athletes to stop for UNK.  Homecourt may be a contributor to the Lopers success in this game as well.

For UNK, their 5-2 record is very good, but these two games will be a new test for the young squad. Freshman Shiloh McCool has continued to lead the way for UNK averaging 9.4 points per game. Maegan Holt has come along as of late recording two straight games in double figures, and her average stands at 9.0 points per game.

This team’s strength has been scoring in bunches by forcing turnovers. UNK is forcing on average 22.2 turnovers per game. In each of these contests, UNK will need to force turnovers to get the victory.

UNK will face Fort Hays State tonight, that game can be heard on 93.1 The River with pregame set for 5:20 P.M. Emporia State will visit UNK on Thursday and pregame for that contest will begin at 5:20 P.M. on 93.1 The River.
