Creighton baseball downs Omaha

Omaha, Neb. — The Creighton Baseball team celebrated its brief return to TD Ameritrade Park Omaha with a decisive 9-2 win over UNO on Tuesday, April 17.

The win pushed the Bluejays to 21-10 on the season, while the Mavericks fell to 12-19.

Creighton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as sophomore Isaac Collins reached on an error with one down and eventually scored on an RBI single from junior Jack Strunc.

Leading 1-0, the game turned Creighton’s way in the top of the second as freshman Ian Evansworked out a bases loaded jam to preserve the advantage.  Two walks and a hit batter ended starter Denson Hull‘s day with one out in the second. Evans came on from the pen with a 1-0 count on UNO’s Jack Kalina, getting the Maverick shortstop to bounce into a 5-4-3 double play to end the frame.

One inning later the Bluejay offense took charge as Creighton sent nine men to the plate. Senior Blake Whitecotton got things started with a walk, then junior Clark Brinkman and Collins followed with singles to fill the bags with Bluejays. Junior Michael Emodi plated Whitecotton with a deep sac fly to right to make it 2-0. Sophomore Will Robertson and Strunc followed with RBI singles to give the Jays a 4-0 edge.

Creighton added two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles from junior Thomas Luevano and sophomore Jason Allbery.

The Mavericks plated a run in the sixth, collecting their first two hits of the game to make it 6-1.

The Bluejays answered quickly with a one out walk  to Collins, an RBI double from Emodi and a monster home run by Robertson. The round tripper was Robertson’s seventh of the season, tying him with Emodi for the team lead.

After getting out trouble in the second Evan delivered a total of four innings of one run ball to earn the win (2-0). Maverick starter Spencer Kowlewyn took the loss (2-3), yielding one unearned run in his only inning of work.

Offensively Strunc and Robertson, Creighton’s four and five hitters, combined to finish 5-of-10 with five RBI and two runs scored.

Creighton returns to the diamond on Friday, April 20 as the Bluejays return to BIG EAST action with a three-game series at Xavier. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm (CT).
