The win moved Creighton to 6-4 on the season, while Arkansas-Pine Bluff fell to 4-5.
Creighton opened the game with four runs on two hits in the first inning. Junior Clark Brinkman and sophomore Isaac Collins drew walks and notched steals to put runners at second and third. Strunc followed with a two-run single to center. One out later, sophomore Will Robertson plated Strunc with an RBI single to right. Creighton’s final run of the inning cross as Robertson scored on an error.
The Bluejays added to their lead with three runs in the fifth, without the benefit of a hit. Strunc led off the frame with a walk, then Emodi was hit by a pitch and Robertson walked. One out later, Hovey lifted a sacrifice fly to right to make it 5-0. Emodi and Robertson later scored on another error.
Pine Bluff responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, then scratched across another two in the sixth as the game went to the seventh with Creighton holding a 7-5 edge.
The Bluejays’ offense went back to work in the eighth as Emodi blasted his third home run in the last two games, crushing a home run to center field.
Creighton sophomore Mitch Boyer earned the win (2-0) with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Pine-Bluff’s Jordan O’Guinn took the loss (0-3), allowing four runs on two hits in one inning of work.
The Bluejays return to diamond on Friday, March 8 as Creighton begins a three-game series with Minnesota at 6:30 pm.
