Evansville, Ind. — Exploding for 10 runs on 14 hits, the Creighton Baseball squad took the series final from Evansville, 10-4, on Sunday, March 17. The win gave the Bluejays a 3-2 record during its spring break travels to St. Louis and Evansville, moving the Bluejay record to 8-5 on the season, while Evansville fell to 9-7.
Creighton got on the board first, plating three runs on a pair of doubles an error and a sac fly. Junior Isaac Collins opening the frame getting to first on an error, then fellow juniors Will Robertson and Jake Holton delivered back-to-back RBI doubles. Junior Parker Upton plated the final run of the inning with a sac fly to center.
Upton tacked on a solo home run in the sixth, then Creighton pushed four across in the sixth. The Bluejays’ four-run sixth came on six hits. The frame started with four consecutive hits for Creighton from Robertson, an RBI double by Holton, followed by a single and RBI single from senior Jack Strunc and Upton respectively. Later senior Jordan Hovey slapped an RBI single through the right side and Vilches blasted an RBI double to left-center.
Evansville got its tallies with a single run in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Bluejay started Evan Johnson picked up the win (1-0), allowing two runs on four hits in five innings of work. Four Creighton relievers combined to hold Evansville to two runs the rest of the way, highlighted by two scoreless innings from junior John Sakowski and a flawless ninth from senior closer Bobby Kametas.
Offensively the Bluejays got three hits, three RBI and two runs scored from Robertson as well as two hits, three RBI and two runs scored from Upton.
Creighton returns to the diamond on Friday, March 22 as the Bluejays begin a road series at Maryland at 5:30 pm (CT).
