Creighton Men drop game at OU

NORMAN, Okla. — Season-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds from Martin Krampelj weren’t enough to help the Creighton men’s basketball team pull out a road win at Oklahoma, as the Bluejays fell to the 10-1 Sooners by an 83-70 score on Tuesday night before a crowd of 8,020 at Lloyd Noble Center in Norman.

Creighton (7-4) scored twice in the opening minute and made its first five two-point shots to quickly take a 10-4 lead over the host Sooners. OU would answer with the next 10 points to take the lead for the rest of the night, with Rashard Odomes coming off the bench to score the final six points in that spurt. Davion Mintz scored inside to end that run, but OU pushed the lead to double-figures with another 10-0 run as it turned into a 20-2 run and the Sooner lead grew to 24-12.

The lead hovered around the 10-12 range for much of the first half, with Marcus Zegarowski canning CU’s first three-pointer of the game with 1:06 left in the first half on his team’s 13th attempt of the game. Brady Manek helped OU match its largest lead of the first half, sinking a three-pointer in the final seconds of the first half to help the Sooners to a 47-33 lead at the intermission.

Krampelj had a pair of dunk and led CU with 11 points in the first half, but CU’s leading scorers Ty-Shon Alexander and Mitch Ballock combined to shoot 0-for-8 in the first half and both men were scoreless. CU shot 14-of-19 from two-point range and 2-of-4 at the line in the first half while turning the ball over 11 times. Manek and reserve Kristian Doolittle each had 11 points in the first half to lead OU, which shot 59.3 percent overall and made 13-of-18 free throws.

Creighton fell behind 49-33 early in the second half before drawing as close as 10 at 52-42 and again at 59-49. A three-ball from Zegarowski, followed by Krampelj’s fifth dunk of the night made it 61-54 with 10:58 remaining, the closest CU had been since it was 19-12 just eight minutes into the game. CU twice three-point attempts to draw within four that missed the mark, and five straight empty trips saw OU push the lead back to 11.

CU was within 68-61 with 4:50 to go before a triple from Manek helped secure OU’s 10th win of the season. An Alexander trey in transition returned the margin to seven with 1:58 left, but CU got no closer.

Krampelj had 19 points and all 10 of his rebounds in the second half to lead CU in both categories. Jefferson finished with 16 points and Zegarowski was 5-for-6 from the floor as the reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week recorded 12 points. Creighton led the nation with 44.8 percent shooting from three-point range coming in to the night, but finished 7-of-30 (23.3 percent) from deep overall.

Oklahoma was paced by 18 points from Manek, while Odomes and Doolittle each contributed 13 to help an OU offense that placed five men in double-figures.

Creighton returns to the court again on Thursday night at 7 p.m. when it hosts Coe.
