Cyclones Sign Transfer Pitcher Ellie Spelhaug

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State softball head coach Jamie Pinkerton announced the addition of Bradley University transfer Ellie Spelhaug on Wednesday. Spelhaug, a right-handed pitcher, was among the best prep softball players in the state in the 2018 class, but opted instead to play basketball during her initial collegiate season with the Braves.

Spelhaug, whose sister Carli is a member of Iowa State’s incoming 2019 freshman class, will join her sister with the Cyclone softball program for the 2019-2020 campaign.

Ellie Spelhaug
Hometown: Bettendorf, Iowa
High School: Pleasant Valley High School
Spelhaug had an outstanding prep career at Pleasant Valley, leading the Spartans to back-to-back state championships in 2017 and 2018. As a senior in 2018, Spelhaug was named First Team All-State and was honored as the Quad City Athlete of the Year. She piled up a 24-2 record with a sterling 0.67 ERA and 133 strikeouts during her senior campaign while batting .473 with 14 home runs. In total, Spelhaug compiled a 92-16 career record for the Spartans.

Spelhaug will look to make an immediate impact for an Iowa State pitching staff that graduated two of the most accomplished pitchers in school history in Savannah Sanders and Emma Hylen. Both 2019 graduates left ISU among the school’s top-10 in career starts, appearances and innings pitched.

On the hardwood, Spelhaug competed in 26 games as a true freshman at Bradley, averaging 10.5 minutes per contest. She put up a career-high 13 points in 27 minutes of action while going 5-of-8 from 3-point range on Feb. 1 vs. Valparaiso.
