Eagles and Huskies bring home CRC championships

Eagles and Huskies bring home CRC championships
It was championship Friday at the 2019 Crossroads Conference basketball tournament at the York City Auditorium.
The girls title game was no contest, as BDS claimed their second consecutive CRC tourney championship, and third in four seasons, with a 42-19 thumping of McCool Junction. It was competitive for awhile, as the Eagles were up 22-15 at halftime, but the Mustangs only managed 4 second-half points in their first title game appearance since 2003.
BDS junior star Regan Alfs was too much for McCool to handle, especially after halftime, when she poured in 12 third quarter points on her way to a game high 20. Jadyn Kleinschmidt added 12 for BDS, while Kierra Green scored 6 for the Mustangs.
The boys championship between Shelby-Rising City and Giltner proved to be more exciting, as it was close most of the way, with the Huskies hanging on at the end to win a thriller, 47-46 over the Hornets.
The first half was close, with the lead changing hands several times, but SRC held a 24-20 halftime advantage on the strength of 11 points each from Austin Coffin and Jett Pinneo.
In the third period, it looked as though the Huskies may run away with the game, as they opened up a 10 point lead, and seemingly had the momentum. But the Giltner offense came alive thanks to Dayne Hinrichs and Rody Lyon, with 16 and 9 second-half points, respectively. Hinrichs had a chance to win it for the Hornets, but he missed two short-range shots in heavy traffic before the final buzzer sounded.
Coffin, with 20 points, and Pinneo with 17, led the way for Shelby-Rising City, as they won the CRC tourney title for the first time since 1980. Hinrichs paced defending champion Giltner with 25 game-high points.
