Huskers Start 2-0 On The Court

Nebraska started the 2018-2019 basketball season with a pair of wins. The first win came over Mississippi Valley Delta, 106-37 and the second was over Southeastern Lousiana, 87-35. Both the offense and defense looked as if they could do no wrong early in this season. This week the Huskers will be tested against Seton Hall.

So far in this early season, senior Glynn Watson Jr. has been the go-to offensive player. In the opener against Mississippi Valley Delta he scored 16 points on 7-10 shooting and he nearly mimicked that performance as he shot 7-10 and had 19 points against Southeastern Lousiana. He’s leading the way for the Huskers with his average at 17.5 points per game, 4.5 rebounds, and three assists. He’s shooting 70% from the field and 58% from three-point range.

Fellow senior James Palmer Jr. is the second leading scorer so far with 17 points per game. Senior Issac Copeland Jr. is at 10.5 points per game and junior Isaiah Roby is at eight points per game and six rebounds. Expect to see the numbers for Copleand Jr. and Roby to expand as neither one has played a ton of minutes with the two blowout wins.

Some of the pleasant surprises this season have been the young players on the roster. Nana Akenten is a sophomore and is averaging 13.5 points per game in just 14 minutes of play per game. He will be key in stretching the floor for the Huskers this season and he is already shooting at a 53% clip beyond the arc. Freshman Brady Heiman is averaging nearly a double-double at 9.5 points and nine rebounds. Heiman looks to be building confidence in these early games for the Big Red. Fellow Freshman Amir Harris appears to be a steady rotational player as he is averaging 19.5 minutes, five points and two assists.

This week, the Huskers will be tested against Seton Hall on Wednesday.  So far they have started with a 1-0 record. Their victory came over Wagner 89-49. Last season this team finished 22-12 and fell in the round of 32 in the NCAA tournament to Kansas, 83-79.  Myles Powell is leading the way for the Pirates averaging 30 points per game.

The Huskers tipoff against the Pirates on Wednesday at 6:30 P.M. with pregame set for 5:30 P.M. You can hear the game on KRVN.
