Iowa State loses close game at TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Iowa State football team dropped a nail biter Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium, with the game tied with just seconds remaining, TCU’s Jonathan Song connected on a 28-yard field goal to push the Horned Frogs past Iowa State, 17-14. Iowa State was unable to answer in the final 37 seconds. The loss drops Iowa State to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 play, and TCU improves to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 action.

It was the Cyclones who would strike first after Will McDonald collected a sack and a forced fumble, which was recovered by JaQuan Bailey at the TCU 22, setting up a two-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zeb Noland to tight end Charlie Kolar. TCU would answer the Cyclones on its next drive after a 10-yard touchdown catch by Taye Barber. Both teams would enter the locker room tied at the half, 7-7.

The Horned Frogs would capitalize at the beginning of the third quarter after a fumble by Noland, as Ben Banogu picked up the fumble recovery and ran it back 47-yards for the touchdown to give TCU a 14-7 lead.

After a stagnant first half for the ISU offense, running back David Montgomery would find his rhythm in fourth quarter, accounting for 51 yards of an ISU scoring drive on seven carries. Montgomery would finish off the drive with a one-yard score to tie the game, 14-14. The touchdown was Montgomery’s 16th career rushing touchdown.

Players of Note…
Montgomery finished with 101 rush yards, marking his 16th career 100-yard rushing game. He is now tied for seventh in school history for 100-yard rushing games in his career.

Defensively, the Cyclones had nine tackles for a loss, their second-straight game with seven or more TFL’s. Braxton Lewis led the Cyclones with two on the evening. Willie Harvey led ISU with 12 tackles, his sixth career game with 10 or more tackles.

The defense also accounted for three turnovers with an interception by Lewis and two fumbles recovered by JaQuan Bailey and O’Rien VanceD’Andre Payne and McDonald were credited with the force.

*Hakeem Butler increased his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 19, tying for eighth in school history.

*Charlie Kolar’s touchdown catch was the first by a tight end since E.J. Bibbs’ on Nov. 22, 2014. It was also his first career catch.
*Zeb Noland has thrown a touchdown catch in all four career starts.

*Kene Nwangwu grabbed a 45-yard kick return, his seventh 40+ yard return of his career

Will McDonald’s first career tackle was for a sack and forced fumble.
