AMES, Iowa – No. 13 Kansas (20-6, 9-4 Big 12) downed Iowa State (13-12, 4-9 Big 12) 83-77 Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones couldn’t counter the Jayhawks after the break, as KU shot a sizzling 61.5 percent from the field in the second period to pull away.
Iowa State was led by Cameron Lard, who posted his second-straight double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Lard also had two blocks and made 7-of-11 shots from the field. Solomon Young added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Udoka Azubuike paced the Jayhawks with 19 points, connecting on 9-of-10 shots from the floor.
How It Happened
Zoran Talley Jr. helped the Cyclones take an early 17-11 lead with seven points in the first eight minutes of the contest. The Jayhawks took their first lead of the game (21-19) with 9:01 remaining in the first half when Lagerald Vick buried a trey to cap off a 10-2 KU run.
Back-to-back bombs by Svi Mykhailiuk increased the Jayhawk lead to 27-21 with just over eight minutes remaining in the first stanza, but the Cyclones responded with seven-straight to regain the lead at 28-27.
KU went into the break with a 39-34 lead.
The Jayhawks made five-of-six shots to open the second half to help increase their lead to 51-41. Azubuike was able to break loose in the paint to score six points in the early moments of the second period.
The Cyclones hung in there, cutting the deficit to 58-55 after a Lard putback with 11:05 left in the game.
Iowa State couldn’t get any closer than three points the rest of the way with KU’s hot shooting, however.
Players of Note
Cameron Lard continued his progression as a star in his rookie season, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season. He also blocked two shots to give him 50 this year, the most by an ISU rookie in school history.
Zoran Talley Jr. posted his third double-digit scoring game in the last four outings with season-high 15 points. He was 7-of-11 from the field.
