Iowa State Men win thriller over Texas

AMES, Iowa- No. 20 Iowa State (17-5, 6-3 Big 12) held on to defeat Texas (12-10, 4-5 Big 12), 65-60 in a thriller at Hilton Coliseum Saturday afternoon.

Iowa State led by 13 points in the first half and gave up the lead for the first time late in the second half, but rallied to make plays down the stretch to come out on top.

UT took a brief three-point lead with under seven minutes left, but Nick Weiler-Babb hit a big 3-pointer followed by a crucial four-point play from Lindell Wigginton to halt the UT assault.

Weiler-Babb had 11 points in the win, including a key bank shot with a minute remaining to give the Cyclones a three-point advantage. He also grabbed a team-high seven boards and had three assists and three steals.

Talen Horton-Tucker tallied 15 points and had three steals and Cameron Lard came off the bench to score 11 points.

ISU is now 15-2 when leading at the break.

How It Happened
Iowa State led by as many as 13 points in the first half. Horton-Tucker scored eight points early, including a 3-pointer to give the Cyclones a 22-9 lead with 8:43 remaining in the opening period.

The Cyclones then went cold and Texas heated up. UT went on an 18-6 run to close the gap to 28-27 in the final moments of the first half. Michael Jacobson hit a 3-pointer to end the first-half scoring, as the Cyclones went into the break with a 31-27 lead.

Lard helped the Cyclones maintain their lead throughout the first 10 minutes of the second half by scoring seven points.

UT came back. Kerwin Roach was fouled on a 3-pointer, connecting on all three foul shots, and Matt Coleman hit a 3-pointer on the next possession, as UT took its first lead of the game at 46-45 with under seven minutes left in the game.

UT took a 48-45 lead on another Coleman bucket, but Weiler-Babb drained a long 3-pointer followed by a Wigginton four-point play, as ISU moved ahead, 52-48 at the 4:34 mark.

The Cyclones increased their lead to eight points (59-51) on a Horton-Tucker trey, but five quick points by the Longhorns made it a 59-56 game with 2:09 left.

A tip-in by Jaxson Hayes cut the Cyclone lead to one point, but Weiler-Babb followed with a 12-foot bank shot and Marial Shayok hit a jumper to give ISU a 63-58 lead with :25 seconds left.

Players of Note
Nick Weiler-Babb made big shot after big shot, scoring 11 points in the Cyclone win. Weiler-Babb was 4-of-8 from the field and 3-of-5 from downtown. His 3-pointer tied the game with 5:11 left and bank shot with a minute left gave the Cyclones a 3-point edge. He also led the team in rebounds (7), assists (3) and steals (3).

Talen Horton-Tucker was in double figures for the third time in the last four games, tallying 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Horton-Tucker also grabbed six boards and made three 3-pointers, including a big one with under three minutes left.
