Iowa State Softball falls to Saint Francis

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Iowa State (17-16) fell 3-2 to Saint Francis (16-15) on Sunday in the finale of the Wooo Pig Classic at Bogle Park. Sally Woolpert hit her first home run of the season, and pitcher Emma Hylen rang up a season-high seven strikeouts, but it was not enough to defeat the Red Flash.

The Cyclones got the start they were looking for, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Sami Williams singled up the middle to open the game, and Sally Woolpert later stepped to the plate and hit a two-run home run to left field, her first of the season

Iowa State struggled to generate offense after the two-run, four-hit first inning. SFU pitcher Abby Trahan held the Cyclones to just one base hit the rest of the game, a single by Skyler Ramos.

Saint Francis chipped away, scoring one run in both the third and fourth innings as the ISU bats went quiet on the other side. Hayley Norton notched an RBI double to center field in the third, and Mikayla Bower hit an RBI double down the left field line in the following inning, tying the game at 2-2.

The Red Flash took their first lead of the game in the home half of the sixth inning. Cheyenne McKee led-off the frame with a base hit to third base, and Kassidy Troxell came up with a two-out RBI single to left field, which proved to be the winning run.

Hylen went all 6.0 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, to go with seven K’s and no walks.

On Deck
Iowa State will open Big 12 play this weekend with a trip to Stillwater, Okla. to take on Oklahoma State. The Cyclones and Cowgirls open their three-game series on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
