Williams later scored on an RBI single up the middle by freshman Mikayla Ramos to give ISU a 1-0 lead.
Two more Iowa State runs came across in the top of the fourth. Kaylee Bosworth opened the inning with a base hit up the middle, followed by a Cal Poly error and an intentional walk for Williams to load the bases. Pinch hitter Talyn Lewis then dug in and was hit by pitch to score Bosworth. Woolpert collected her second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly down the left field line to extend the lead to 3-0.
Cal Poly scored one in the home half of the third, but the Cyclones answered in the top of the fifth. Taylor Nearad led-off the inning with a double, and Bosworth then brought her home with an RBI triple to center field.
The Mustangs again threatened, cutting the ISU lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but Cyclone pitcher Emma Hylen and the defense shut the door. Hylen pitched all 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits to go with three strikeouts to improve to 5-3 on the season.
The Cyclones return to Bob Janssen Field on Saturday for day two of the ShareSLO Mustang Classic. Iowa State will play Utah State at noon and Cal Poly at 5 p.m. CT.
