HOUSTON – Iowa State (13-12) closed out the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic with a 3-0 victory over Penn State (1-16) on Sunday. Sydney Stites went 2-of-3 at the plate with a triple, a home run and two RBIs, while Emma Hylen pitched a complete game shutout.
Sami Williams also notched a solo home run, as the Cyclones took down the Nittany Lions. Hylen’s gem was the cherry on top of a dominant pitching weekend for Iowa State. The Cyclone pitching trio of Savannah Sanders, Brianna Weilbacher and Hylen allowed just three earned runs in five games in Houston.
Iowa State 3, Penn State 0
The Cyclones set the tone early, as Williams opened the bottom of the first inning by crushing a solo home run to left field. Williams’ shot was her fourth homer of the season, tied with Kaylee Bosworth for the most on the team.
The top of the ISU order was productive once again in the bottom of the third. Williams got things going with a single to left field, and Stites came to the plate and blasted her two-run shot to left center, easily clearing the fence at Cougar Softball Stadium. The home run gave Iowa State a 3-0 lead, which proved to be enough with Hylen working in the circle.
The junior hurler from Roseville, Minn., was dominant against PSU, allowing no runs and just three hits in 7.0 innings. Hylen and the Cyclone defense put the Nittany Lions down in order in five of seven innings. PSU did not have a base runner after the fourth inning.
Stites also notched her first triple of the season on a shot down the right field line, but was left stranded.
The Cyclones close the weekend with a 3-2 record in Houston, notching wins over Lipscomb, Houston and Penn State.
Iowa State will stay on the road and travel north to Arlington, Texas. The Cyclones will face UT Arlington on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
