CONWAY, S.C. – Iowa State (2-3) fell 2-0 to UNC-Greensboro (3-1) on Sunday in ISU’s final game at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic at Coastal Carolina Softball Stadium. The Cyclones out-hit UNCG 8-3, but were unable to string offense together and break through on the scoreboard.

UNCG got all of its offense early in Sunday’s game, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. Rachael McClaskey opened the frame with a lead-off double and the Spartans loaded the bases with no outs on back-to-back walks. The Cyclones fought to get out of the inning, as Talyn Lewis threw out a runner at home on a fielder’s choice, followed by an infield fly.
However, Makenna Matthijs connected on a two-RBI single down the left field line, scoring teammates Emily Acquaviva and Alexis Overdiep. Iowa State got out of the inning with no further damage done, but the offense was never able to answer.
Cyclone starter Savannah Sanders and the defense were excellent from that point forward, sending the Spartans down in order on three occasions. Sanders pitched all 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on just three hits, to go with four strikeouts on the day.
Iowa State mounted its biggest threat in the bottom of the sixth inning, attempting a two-out rally. Talyn Lewis got aboard with a single up the middle and junior Sally Woolpert followed it up by smacking a base hit to left, advancing to second on the throw.
With runners on the second and third, Nychole Antillon laced a shot that looked like it would get the Cyclones on the board, but it was right at the UNCG third baseman, ending the inning.
Iowa State also got back-to-back base hits from Taylor Nearad and Kaylee Bosworth to lead-off the bottom of the seventh, breathing life into a Cyclone comeback. However, Spartan reliever Hannah Stiltner entered and sealed the deal for UNCG with three straight outs.
Iowa State is back in action next weekend the Marucci Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. The Cyclones open the tournament on Friday at 5:45 p.m. CT vs. Boise State.
