VERMILLION, South Dakota – Iowa State got back over .500 with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-xx) sweep of South Dakota Tuesday night at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. ISU is now 9-8 on the year, while USD fell to 17-3.
The Iowa State offense fired its way to a .319 hitting percentage, led by 10 kills at a .625 hitting percentage from Alexis Conaway. Samara Westalso contributed 10 kills to the effort. The Cyclone defense held South Dakota to a .070 hitting percentage, with Hali Hillegas posting 15 digs, and 10 digs from Jess Schaben.
Iowa State Dominant in First Set
Iowa State was dominant from the start, with the Cyclones rattling off the first six points. Though there were no aces in the run, ISU can thank some strong Ciara Capezio serving and defense to build that advantage. Sticking with the 6-2 offense that worked well at No. 4 Texas, the Cyclones hit. 471 in the first set. Iowa State was able to apply pressure in all facets of the game, controlling the net on defense as well with 3.0 total blocks. ISU took the first 25-11 when Grace Lazard put down a kill.
ISU Offense Leads the Way in Second Set
At 2-2, ISU went on a 5-0 run to open up a 7-2 advantage. Once again, the Cyclones’ size at the net was too much for the Coyotes. Though the dominance was not reflected in the blocking numbers, as ISU has just one second-set block, Iowa State’s offense continued to power kills down at the net. Iowa State had another 17-kill set, this time getting it at a .368 hitting percentage. Anna Kiel closed things out for Iowa State with a kill off the block to give the Cyclones the second frame 25-12.
Defensive Effort Takes ISU to Sweep
The Cyclone offense was not firing on all cylinders early in the third, but the defense made up for it, both at the net and in the back row. Iowa State got up by five points at 9-4, but the Cyclones lost their focus, and allowed USD to go on a 6-0 run to take its first lead of the evening at 15-13. The home team’s advantage did not last long, as the Cyclones had it tied back up at 16-16 on a Jess Schaben kill, and were back ahead at 20-19 on a Samara West cross-court kill. While the Coyotes did tie it again at 21-21, ISU would not allow the home side in front. The Cyclones finished things off on West’s 10th kill of the evening at 25-21.
