Iowa State Volleyball falls at Baylor

WACO, Texas – Iowa State was once again shorthanded Wednesday night and fell to Baylor 3-1 (25-13, 25-19, 19-25, 25-21) at the Ferrell Center. ISU is now 12-13, 5-7 in Big 12 play. BU improves to 16-7, 8-4 in league play.

The Cyclones were led by Jess Schaben, who had a season-high 26 kills at .344 hitting along with eight digs, four blocks and an ace. Candelaria Herrera had nine kills and seven blocks, while Jenna Brandt had two kills, three digs, two blocks and an ace in her first career start at middle blocker. In the back row, Izzy Enna had 11 digs.

First Set: Baylor 25 Iowa State 13
The Cyclones struggled on both ends, unable to find rhythm on offense while being unable to slow down the Baylor attack. BU went on a 6-0 run to open up a 14-6 advantage. The Bears hit .714 for the set, not committing an attack error in the process. Meanwhile, the visiting Cyclones were held to .074 hitting for the frame, with BU posting 4.0 total blocks. Baylor moved ahead 1-0 when Shelly Fanning tipped through the ISU block at 25-13.

Second Set: Baylor 25 Iowa State 19
Iowa State scored the first four points of the set, but Baylor countered with five-straight of their own to move ahead 5-4. Once again, Yossiana Pressley’s first trip behind the service line sparked Baylor, as the Bears went on a 5-0 run to move ahead 12-7. The Bears let the Cyclones back into the set with back-to-back attack errors cutting their advantage to one at 15-14. Baylor pulled away again, going on another 5-0 run to move ahead 22-16. BU moved ahead 2-0 when Fanning put down her 11th kill of the evening at 25-19.

Third Set: Iowa State 25 Baylor 19
The Cyclone block stepped up to help push ISU to the first four points of the set again. The Baylor serve led the response with an ace to tie the set at 8-8 and another to move ahead 10-9. The ISU block rose up again to get the visitors back ahead, with Jenna Brandt getting an ace to move ISU ahead 13-10. Schaben continued to pile up the kills, as her shot from the back row got the Cyclones ahead by thre again at 18-15. The ISU lead became four when Schaben and Brandt combined for a block at 21-17. The Cyclone block posted 5.0 total blocks in the set to restrict BU to .100 hitting in the frame. Iowa State claimed the third when Candelaria Herrera fired a kill at 25-19.

Fourth Set: Baylor 25 Iowa State 21
Baylor was their own worst enemy early as consecutive attack errors gave ISU a 6-4 lead. The Bears were briefly ahead at 9-8, but the Cyclones stormed back with a 4-0 run to move ahead 12-9. The home side fought back to tie it on four separate occasions, before pushing back ahead at 19-18 on a Pressley kill. It was part of a 5-0 run which allowed BU ahead for good to close out the match. ISU was able to fight off two match points, but Baylor closed it out when Fanning put away her 16th kill of the night at 25-21.

Iowa State returns to Hilton Coliseum on Saturday to host West Virginia. First serve between the Cyclones and Mountaineers will be at 8 p.m.
