Iowa State Volleyball sweeps Ole Miss to begin season

AMES, Iowa – No. 21 Iowa State opened the 2018 volleyball season with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-19) sweep of Ole Miss Friday night at Hilton Coliseum. The win propels ISU to 1-0 on the season, while Ole Miss finishes the day 1-1.

The Cyclone attack was stellar, hitting .433 as a team. The effort was led by 11 kills at a .550 hitting percentage by Grace Lazard and 10 kills at a .714 hitting clip from Eleanor Holthaus. Jess Schaben also reached double figures with 10 kills.

On defense, Hali Hillegas had 17 digs to help hold the Rebels to a .104 hitting percentage. Her performance saw Hillegas become the 15th player in Iowa State history to reach 1,000 career digs.

Set One: Iowa State 25 Ole Miss 21
The first frame was tied 4-4 before the Cyclones raced ahead on a 4-0 run which featured a pair of kills from Holthaus and Schaben. ISU was able to bring the advantage home from there, as a failed setter dump by Ole Miss’ Lauren Bars gave the first set to the Cyclones 25-21.

Set Two: Iowa State 25 Ole Miss 11
The Cyclones got the lead for good in the set via an early 3-0 run to make it 7-5, but it was the end of the set which saw ISU really dominate. The Cyclones finished the set on a 9-2 run, which included a 7-0 run on the serve of Izzy Enna. ISU hit .500 for the set, led by six kills from Schaben. The home team moved ahead 2-0 when Bayleigh Scott fired wide at 25-11.

Set Three: Iowa State 25 Ole Miss 19
Lazard served up a 9-0 run which included a trio of aces to put ISU ahead for good in the set at 12-5. The Cyclones, who hit .469 for the frame, saw the Rebels fight off six Iowa State match points before ISU finally sent the fans home happy when Hannah Bailey went down the middle for a kill at 25-19.

Player of the Match
Eleanor Holthaus. The freshman had an outstanding debut for Iowa State, racking up 10 kills at a .714 hitting percentage. The Richmond, Minnesota native got four kills each in the first and third sets.

Iowa State has a doubleheader on Saturday inside Hilton Coliseum to close the Iowa State Challenge. The action starts at 10 a.m. with the Cyclones against Virginia. The nightcap at 6:30 p.m. with feature ISU against Oregon State.
