Iowa State Volleyball sweeps TCU

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State made it two wins in a row with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-16) sweep of TCU Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. The win pushes ISU back to .500 at 10-10 overall on the year and 3-4 in Big 12 play. TCU is now 11-7 overall, 3-4 in league play.

Iowa State hit over .300 for the third-straight match, finishing with .339 hitting. The Cyclone attack was well-balanced, led by a double-double of 12 kill and 10 digs by Jess Schaben. Eleanor Holthaus and Josie Herbest each had nine kills. The Cyclone block had 13.0 total blocks, led by eight stuffs from Candelaria Herrera.

Set One: Iowa State 25 TCU 15
While the Cyclone defense settled into the contest, Iowa State’s offense carried the work load, as the ISU middles in particular got things going. The home team went on a 3-0 run to get ahead 11-9 and then put the set out of the Frogs’ reach with a 4-0 run to make it 19-14. Iowa State hit .400 while using 4.0 total blocks to hold the Horned Frogs to .071 hitting. ISU wrapped up the first when Candelaria Herrera and Eleanor Holthaus combined to stuff Allye Beth Deaton at 25-15.

Set Two: Iowa State 25 TCU 21
Piper Mauck fired off a 6-0 run to start the set, which included an ace and two blocks. However, TCU bounced back and got ahead at 8-7 when Holthaus fired long. The Frogs got ahead by three at 12-9, but Iowa State picked it up and knotted things back up at 14-14 on a Josie Herbst kill. Herbst’s ace put ISU back in front at 16-15, but TCU was able to pull ahead again at 20-19 on an Anna Walsh ace. Iowa State got ahead again at 22-21 on a Herbst and Herrera block, and made it to set point at 24-21. ISU closed out the set on a 5-0 run when TCU could not get the ball over on the next point at 25-21.

Set Three: Iowa State 25 TCU 16
Iowa State broke through with a 4-1 run to get ahead 9-6. The set stayed in that range for most of the going until Jess Schaben took over with four-straight kills and a block to put ISU ahead for good at 18-11. The Cyclone defense was big again in the set, recording 5.0 total blocks on the set to hold the Frogs to .122 hitting. ISU reached match point at 24-15 and put it away on the second asking when Josie Herbst put down her ninth kill of the afternoon at 25-16.

Player of the Match
Piper Mauck. The Cyclone setter guided the ISU offense to its third-straight .300 hitting percentage match, leading ISU to a .339 hitting clip. The TCU attack focused on Mauck, but she was able to hold her own, finishing with a double-double of 37 assists and 12 digs, while also posting two blocks.

Iowa State has a mid-week bye before returning to action on Saturday at Big 12 leaders Kansas. First serve between the Cyclones and Jayhawks in Lawrence will be at 1 p.m.
