DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State (3-3, 0-0 Big 12) fell to hot-shooting Drake (4-3, 0-0 MVC), 83-80, on Thursday night at the Knapp Center. The Cyclones rallied from a 16-point third-quarter deficit to lead in the final minutes, but were foiled by Becca Hittner’s game-winning basket with two ticks left on the clock. The Bulldogs shot 56.1 percent from the floor for the game.
The Cyclones were paced by Emily Durr, who poured in 21 points for her fourth double-figure scoring game of the season, while Bridget Carleton did a little bit of everything with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Adriana Camber also scored a career-high 16 points while shooting 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs set a blistering pace offensively, taking an early 21-14 lead just seven minutes into the game while shooting 9-of-13 from the field. Iowa State’s defense picked up tremendously to close the quarter, holding Drake scoreless while forcing three turnovers, leading to back-to-back lay-ups for Durr and Bride Kennedy-Hopoate. The Cyclones trailed 21-18 at the end of the first stanza.
Iowa State took its first lead of the game at 24-21 early in the second, as Carleton converted an and-1, followed by a triple for Durr. However, the Cyclone lead was short-lived, as Drake closed the half on a 9-0 run behind a trio of 3-pointers over the final 3:43 of the second quarter.
Iowa State struggled offensively, making just one of its final 11 shots to end the first half. Carleton led the way with 14 points in the opening half, including eight of ISU’s 13 second-quarter points. Drake was 7-of-13 beyond the arc in the first half and shot 58.6 percent from the field.
Drake stretched its lead to as many as 16 and looked as if it might put the game out of reach at 58-42 with 3:44 to play in the third quarter. However, the Cyclones flipped the script, ripping off a 15-2 run that was sparked by Camber. The native of Lund, Sweden, scored 13 points in the third quarter alone, knocking down three 3-pointers and assisting Durr on another during the ISU run. Drake’s lead was cut to 62-57 at the end of the third.
The rollercoaster continued in the final stanza, as the Bulldogs quickly built their lead back up to 70-59. Iowa State responded once again, breaking off a 13-0 run to take their first lead since the second quarter at 72-70 with 4:40 to play. The teams traded punches from that point forward until Hittner converted on the game-winning and-1 with two seconds remaining. ISU was unable to get off it’s last-second heave as the Cyclones fell 83-30.
