Late run lifts Ohio State past Creighton Men

OMAHA, Neb. — Ohio State used a game-ending 15-3 run to rally and hand Creighton men’s basketball its first loss of the season, 69-60, in the fourth edition of the Gavitt Tipoff Games

Ohio State improved to 3-0 on the year, while Creighton is now 2-1.

Creighton trailed by 12 points in the second half before rallying to take a 57-54 lead with 4:00 to play before OSU’s final flurry.

Keyshawn Woods led Ohio State with 19 bench points, while Ty-Shon Alexander paced the Bluejays with 16 points.

Creighton raced to a 10-2 lead in the opening minutes as Alexander drained a pair of three-pointers. Ohio State took its first lead at 16-14 on a trey by Duane Washington Jr., and would not trail the rest of the half. The Buckeyes ended the opening session on a 12-4 run to take a 37-25 lead at the intermission. Woods had 15 points off the bench in the first half and the Wake Forest transfer finished with a game-high 19 points.

Creighton scored the first five points of the second half, and tied the game at 48 with 9:47 remaining on a three-pointer by Alexander. The Bluejays then regained their first lead since 14-13 on a tip-in by Martin Krampelj with 5:40 to go.

The teams traded baskets before a Mitch Ballock three-pointer from the left wing extended CU’s lead to 60-56 with 2:57 to play, setting up OSU’s game-ending run.

The Buckeyes scored on their next six possessions, taking a 62-60 lead with 2:10 left on a three-pointer by C.J. Jackson. Jackson had missed his first seven shots and hesitated before the back-breaking three-pointer. He would later add a jumper in the lane with 46.4 remaining to give the Buckeyes a 66-60 cushion. Creighton, which scored on 12 of its final 13 possessions in Sunday’s comeback win over East Tennessee State, came up empty in its final seven trips while suffering its first non-conference home loss since December 2, 2015.

Ohio State shot 47 percent both overall and from three-point range and also led the rebound battle 34-29. The Buckeyes scored 36 bench points and scored 12 points on 11 offensive rebounds.

Besides Alexander’s 16 points, Mintz finished with a season-high 12 points. CU shot 44.2 percent from the floor and made 5-of-9 free throws. CU had 14 turnovers on the night.

Creighton returns to the court on Monday in George Town, Cayman Islands, at the Cayman Islands Classic when it meets Boise State.
