Legion baseball recap: Z’s win, PVC lose
Both Westco teams picked up their first wins of the season on Tuesday night at Cleveland Field.

On a lovely night for baseball at Cleveland Field the Westco Zephyrs knocked off Douglas, WY, 10-2, to earn their first win of the season.

During a rocky 0-7 start to the season the Zephyrs had barely had a lead in any of those games. Last night they jumped out 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning but saw Douglas take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third.

The bottom of the third is when Westco got what they needed; a big crooked number, they scored five times to take control. Braden Lofink snapped a 2-23 start to the year with a ringing two run double down the left field line and then later in the inning Trent Richter dropped down a two run bunt single as Lofink scored from second. It was Richter’s first hit of the season.

From there the pitching took care of the rest.

Evan Hughes, after a rough opening night start when he couldn’t get out of the first inning, was solid. The 6’4 right hander tossed four innings and struck out nine.

Hughes got the win to even up his record at 1-1.

Chase Lovercheck (Southeast High School) pitched the final three frames allowing no hits with three K’s and he walked three.

Brady Sindt finished the night 2-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Lofink 1-3 with the 2 RBI.

Westco improved to 1-7 while Douglas fell to 6-6.

In the Juniors game it was the Westco Express downing Alliance 11-4 for their first win of the season. Jerald Ybarra got the win working five innings allowing 2 earned runs with 4 punchouts. At the plate Ricardo Rodriguez finished 3-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored while Creighton Dike was 2-2 with 3 driven in.

Elsewhere in legion baseball last night….

Gordon-Rushville 16, Gering Platte Valley Companies 9…..With the loss Gering’s record falls to 3-3. G-R scored 7 runs in the second inning to take control. Dylan Radzymski got the start for PVC and lasted just 1 1/3 innings allowing 6 earned runs with 6 walks. Brent Barge wrapped out three hits while Brayden Tarr finished 2-4.

Gering B&C Steel 12, Gordon-Rushville 0…..The hot start to the season for the Gering juniors continued as they improved to 8-0 with the road shutout. Quinton Janacek did it all in this one; the junior to be pitched a complete game five inning shutout with four K’s and at the plate he went 4-4 out of the leadoff spot to set the tone.
