Kearney, Neb. – Junior Alex Achtermann threw eight shutout innings and pushed his hit steak to 19 straight games to help Nebraska-Kearney blank Fort Hays State, 7-0, Tuesday night in Kansas. This was the start of an eight-game road trip for the Lopers (17-11, 10-4). UNK will face the Tigers (11-19, 3-14) two more times this season; April 11 (Tues.) at home and April 25 (Wed.) back in Hays. A junior who bats left handed and throws right handed, Achtermann (Denver, Colo.) has done a bit of everything for the Lopers this season.
Named the MIAA Hitter of the Week earlier on Tuesday, Achtermann has played right field, third base, designated hitter and made five starts on the mound. This start was his best as he fanned six, walked one and allowed just three singles and a double in eight full innings of work. Coaxing the Tigers to ground out 12 times, Achtermann threw 99 pitches and is now 3-1 on the year with a 2.66 ERA. The Lopers remain now head East to face the 10th-ranked Central Missouri Mules (21-6) this Thursday-Saturday. The series is moved up one full day due to the Easter Holiday.
