Kearney, Neb. – Nebraska-Kearney head volleyball coach Rick Squiers announced today that Stuart native Monique “Mo”
Schafer will play for the Lopers next season.

The transfer from Northeast C.C. in Norfolk is the seventh and final recruit for UNK this year. The 5-9 defensive specialist and outside hitter is the second transfer in the group. data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAPABAP///wAAACH5BAEKAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw%3D%3D

For the Hawks in 2017, Schafer earned first-team all-region and all-conference honors. Averaging 4.9 digs and 2.7 kills per set, she was named MVP of the Region XI Tournament and also garnered second-team Academic all-region accolades. She played in all 35 matches for a Hawks squad that went 19-16 and reached the NJCAA Nationals for a second straight fall.

“In addition to being a skilled and versatile volleyball player, Monique has a warrior’s mentality and loves to compete. She is a habitual winner, and we look forward to her future contributions to Loper volleyball,” said Squiers.

At Stuart High Schafer won 12 varsity letters as a member of the basketball, volleyball and track teams. Helping the Broncos finish as Class D2 volleyball state runners up in 2014 and 2013 and a member of the 2015 Class D third place basketball team, she managed 268 kills, 273 digs, 31 blocks and 20 aces as a senior.

Named to the Norfolk Daily News Class D All-Area Elite Eight, she also was tabbed first-team Class D2 all-state by both the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal Star.

UNK has made 19 straight NCAA Tournament appearances, been ranked in the AVCA Top 10 in seven of the last eight years and currently is riding a 55-match home court win streak. The Lopers begin fall camp in early August.
