FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Midland University was unable to advance past the opening day of the NWCA National Duals going 1-2 in their matches on Thursday. The Warriors dropped their first bout against University of the Cumberlands and then defeated Concordia University before being eliminated by Indiana Institute of Technology. David Berg, a junior from West Point, Neb., went 3-0 in his matches. Winning each bout at 141 lbs. by decision.
Berg was the lone Warrior to pick a win in their opening round match. He won a 7-2 decision over Trent Leon as Cumberlands won the matchup 42-3.
Against fellow conference foe Concordia, the Warriors earned three wins via forfeit along with another three decisions decided on the mat. Berg won his matchup over Chris Kimball 10-8 at 141 lbs. Paul Longshore followed that up with a 3-1 win over Cody Lambert. Stephon Gray earned the other victory with a 7-4 decision over Kirk Kaliszewski at 165 lbs. Midland advanced with a 27-12 win.
In their third and final match of the day Indiana Tech, Midland could muster just two wins. Berg capped off his tournament with a 7-4 decision over Gaige Torres while Aaron Rafalko won by fall over Tyler Moser at 285 lbs.
Next up for Midland will be rematch with Concordia next week. The Warriors and Bulldogs will square off again, this time closer to home, on Friday, January 12th. First bout is set to start at 7:00 p.m. inside Walz Arena in Seward, Nebraska.
