Midland Men and Women lose regular season finale to Hastings

FREMONT, Neb. – (RV) Hastings College earned the season sweep over Midland University on Wednesday night with a 90-84 win inside Wikert Event Center. The Broncos used an 18-0 run to build a lead they would never relinquish midway through the opening half. The Warriors did all they could to battle back in the second half, getting as close as two points with 24 seconds to play. Midland finishes the regular season at 16-14 (6-12 GPAC) while Hastings improves to 19-10 (9-8 GPAC) with one game left.

Sophomores Ryan Williams and Isaiah Workman combined for 51 of the Warriors’ 84 points on the night going a combined 18-29 from the field. Workman was 7-10 from the foul line and added 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals to his stat line. He was also making his first career start for Midland.

Senior Chase Parsons was the only other Warrior to reach double-digits with 10 points on the night, most coming down the stretch in the final minutes of Midland’s comeback attempt.

Hastings countered the Warriors’ with a balanced attack that featured four players in double-figures. Tyler Hedlund was a perfect 11-11 from the field and 2-2 at the free throw line to finish with a game-high 28 points. Fellow starters Kevin Miller and Bart Hiscock had 17 and 15 respectively while Jake Hansen added 20 points off of the Broncos’ bench.

Midland will now sit back and wait to see how the GPAC season wraps up this weekend as they are off. The Warriors currently sit in the eighth spot in the standings, which would earn them a bid in to the GPAC Postseason Tournament. Their eyes, as well as others in the conference, will be glued to the Briar Cliff vs. Dordt game on Saturday. A win by Dordt will leap frog them over Midland and bring the Warriors’ season to an end. A win by Briar Cliff will earn them a share of the conference title and set up a quarterfinals matchup with Midland next Wednesday.

FREMONT, Neb. – Midland University finished off their regular season on Wednesday night as they hosted No. 12 Hastings College at the Wikert Event Center. Despite a valiant effort by the Warriors, who had their chances in the second half, the Broncos were able to complete the season sweep with an 80-70 win. Midland falls to 14-16 (9-11 GPAC) while Hastings improves to 23-5 (14-5 GPAC).

Hastings led wire-to-wire as they hit their first shot from the field and never really looked back. Midland was able to tie the game twice early on at 3-3 and 6-6 but after they failed to match the Broncos on their next possession. Hastings would go on a couple of mini runs to take a 22-18 lead after one quarter.

In the second they stretched their lead out further after an 8-0 midway through and took a 38-31 lead in to the halftime break.

Midland battled back in the third as they closed to within a point, 50-49, with 1:35 left in the period and trailed by just three heading into the final quarter.
