Midland Men drop Dakota State

MADISON, S.D. – Midland University used a big second half and overcame a double-digit deficit to beat Dakota State University 89-81 on Wednesday night. After falling behind by 14 in the first half the Warriors battled back to take the lead with just over 12 minutes to play to improve to 4-0 to start the year while Dakota State falls to 3-3.

The Trojans led 48-37 at the break as they shot 67% from the field (20-30) and held the Warriors to 39% (13-33). They were the more aggressive team as they led 16-6 in points in the paint and had four fast break points compared to none for the Warriors. Ryan Williams had 18 at the intermission to lead Midland in scoring.

In the second half Chase Parson caught fire as the senior from San Diego, California found his shooting stroke and exploded for 25 points off the bench. He was 5-10 from long range on the night and added four rebounds in 26 minutes. Williams built upon his first half success as the finished with 30 points on 6-11 shooting from distance and 10-17 overall.

Marti Fonolla also eclipsed double figures with 13 points. TK Dixson had 8 assists to pace the team.

“I thought our guys did a good job coming back to get the win tonight,” coach Oliver Drake said. “We’re really proud of the way our guys found a way. We had guys step up when we needed them. This was a gritty win for our program.”

Up next for Midland will be their home-opener on Friday night. The Warriors will take on Grand View (0-1) at 7:00 p.m. inside Wikert Event Center in Fremont, Nebraska. This will be the second meeting of the year for the two teams as they met on November 1st in Des Moines, Iowa to open the season. The Warriors defeated the Vikings 88-78 in that matchup.
