Midland Women earn 2nd win of year

BELLEVUE, Neb. –  Midland University women’s basketball earned their second straight win to start the 2018-19 season with another win over a upper-level opponent. The Lady Warriors (2-0) defeated the (RV) Bellevue Bruins (3-1) 86-74 on Thursday in Bellevue after a statement victory over Division I No. 11-ranked Central Methodist on Wednesday in the season opener.

Midland controlled the game from start-to-finish as the Bruins never held a lead in the game. The Warriors grew their lead to as many as nine points in the first quarter and cruised from there, with the largest lead of the game being by 21 points early in the fourth quarter.

Midland outrebounded Bellevue 38-32 and turned 16 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points. The Warriors shot over 50 percent from the field (29-56, 51.8%) and finished 33.3 percent from three-point range (7-21).

Senior Maddie Egr led the Warriors offensively with a team-high 16 points. Egr also grabbed five rebounds and added an assist. She was followed by junior Maddie Meadows who contributed a jam-packed stat sheet of 14 points – including 4-7 three-point shooting – seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Meadows played a game-high 32 minutes.

Two other Warriors came off the bench to record double-digits as sophomore Katy Gathje and freshman Lexis Haase added 11 points each. Depth was an advantage for the Warriors as 12 different players scored and Midland bested the Bruins in bench points 40-15.

Midland (2-0) will be on the road again on Saturday, November 3 to take on Nebraska Christian College (0-3) as part of the BU-NCC Classic. Tipoff on Saturday is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Lozier Athletic Center in Bellevue, Nebraska.
