Morningside used a school-record breaking blocking performance to defeat Mount Marty 25-19, 25-9, 20-25, 25-16 in Wednesday’s GPAC volleyball match in Sioux City.

The Mustangs had 35 block assists in the contest to break their former school record of 30 block assists in a four-set match against Doane during the 2011 season.

Morningside raised its record to 11-3 overall and climbed to 3-2 in the GPAC to match its entire league victory output from last season when it finished 3-13 in the GPAC. The Mustangs have already surpassed their overall victory total from last season’s 8-20 finish.

The Mustangs’ defensive prowess at the net helped limit the Lancers to a subpar .074 hitting percentage compared to a .229 hitting effort by the Mustangs.

Jayde Bergmann was the big hitter in the Mustangs’ attack with a team-high 11 kills and only three errors in 23 attack attempts to finish with a .348 hitting percentage.

Ashley Vande Stouwe just missed double figures with nine kills to go along with a .333 hitting percentage. Emma Gerber was next with seven kills and a team-high .429 hitting percentage.

Brittni Olson was the key figure in the Mustangs’ blocking effort with 11 block assists. Vande Stouwe and Jenn Buyert each had six block assists, while Gerber had four block assists and the team’s only solo block of the match.

Nikki Oberfoell led the Mustangs’ court coverage with 14 digs for her 13th double figure performance in the Mustangs’ 14 matches. Taylor Ferguson was next with 10 digs to go along with 16 assists and two ace serves. Katie Kuck added nine digs.

Jessica Becker led the Mustangs with three ace serves, while Callie Alberico topped the team with 20 assists.

Morningside will host fourth-ranked Hastings on Saturday at 3 p.m.
