Morningside is ranked second in the nation in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll released on Sept. 19.
The Mustangs, who were also ranked second in last week’s poll, trounced Dordt College 87-14 in last Saturday’s Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) opener in Sioux Center, Iowa, to improve their record to 2-0.
Morningside has been ranked in the NAIA Top 25 for 116 consecutive polls for the nation’s longest active streak in Top 25 rankings.
Morningside is one of five teams from the GPAC in the NAIA Top 25. Doane College is ranked fifth, Concordia University is 16th, Dakota Wesleyan University is 22nd, and Midland University is 25th.
The Mustangs will travel to Whitewater, Wis., this Saturday for a 1 p.m. game against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, which is ranked second nationally in the NCAA Division III.
Morningside posted a 12-2 record last season en route to a fifth consecutive Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) championship and a 12th consecutive post-season appearance in the NAIA Championship Series for the nation’s longest active streak. The Mustangs advanced to the NAIA Championship Series Semifinals, where they lost 30-27 against Southern Oregon University. Morningside has a 126-25 record for a .834 winning percentage since the start of the 2004 season.
