Morningside loses to Bellevue

Nathan DeChaine homered twice and drove in four runs, but it was not enough to prevent Morningside from suffering an 11-7 loss against fifth-ranked Bellevue on Tuesday at Lewis and Clark Park.

The Bruins, who improved their record to 34-6, jumped in front 6-0 after two innings and held off every Mustang rally.

Morningside scored four runs, three on a home run by DeChaine, in the bottom of the third inning to close within 7-4.

The Bruins answered with two runs in both the fourth and sixth frames to expand their lead to 11-5.

Morningside chipped away with runs in the seventh and eighth to close within 11-7 and loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth until a strikeout and double play extinguished the Mustangs’ attempted rally.

Bellevue collected 16 hits, including three each from Jake Browne and Miles Campbell, and four other Bruins had two hits. Todd Nicks did the most damage to the Mustangs with two hits, including a home run, and a team-high three RBIs.

DeChaine went three-for-four with four RBIs to lead the Mustangs. He blasted a three-run homer in the third inning and connected for a solo blast on his next at-bat in the fifth.

DeChaine finished with three of the Mustangs’ six hits. The other hits were a double by Blake Rogers and singles by Nolan Hoff and Dylan Mersola.

The Mustangs will take a 22-17 record into a Thursday GPAC doubleheader in Yankton, S.D., against Mount Marty.
