Morningside’s men’s soccer team routed Mount Marty 9-0 and tied a school record in the process in Sunday’s non-conference game at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
The Mustangs dealt 12 assists in the victory to tie their single-game record. Morningside also had 12 assists in a 13-0 triumph against the Lancers last season.
Sunday’s triumph kept the Mustangs undefeated so far this season with a record of 5-0-1.
Morningside spread the wealth as eight different players scored goals. Joao Soares opened the scoring 16 minutes into the contest when he beat Lancer goal keeper Renzo Stainer for the first of his two goals in the victory. The goal was set up by assists from Tom Karshuening and Reece Maxon.
The Mustangs scored again six minutes later on a goal by Juan Pablo Jochems and the rout was on.
Morningside stretched its lead to 5-0 by the intermission after goals by Karshuening, Joschua Schanda, and Soares.
It took the Mustangs just five minutes into the second half to tack on another goal with a score from Julius Ramcke. Morningside expanded its lead to 8-0 after goals by David Soto and Felix Klaus before Tobias Schomerus scored on a penalty kick to cap the scoring with 18 minutes left.
Karshuening, Maxon, and Murat Turan each contributed two assists to the Mustangs’ school-record tying effort. Karshuening added a goal to his two assists.
Mustang goal keeper Jared Amundson made a save on the only shot he saw in the first half and Pedro Fernandes had a save in the second half.
Morningside outshot the Lancers by a 22-3 margin.
The Mustangs will have a lengthy layoff before they travel to Omaha, Neb., for a 4 p.m. game against Bellevue on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
