Morningside’s volleyball team picked up a victory on the road with a 3-0 sweep of Mayville State on Thursday in Mayville, N.D.

The Mustangs improved their record to 15-9 heading into a Friday match at Valley City State, a team they swept 3-0 at the College of Saint Mary Tournament earlier this season.

Morningside’s victory at Mayville State kept the host Comets in a midseason funk that has seen them drop eight of their last nine matches since an 8-8 start to fall to 9-16 for the season.

The Mustangs had nine blocks in the three sets to help make the Comets’ attack ineffective with a hitting percentage of just .074. Morningside attacked at a .254 clip and received big performances from Brittni Olson and Emma Gerber, who each slammed 11 kills to share match honors. Olson had only one attack error in 21 attempts en route to a solid .476 hitting percentage, while Gerber had only three attack errors and a .400 hitting percentage.

Jayde Bergmann just missed double figures with eight kills, while Jenn Buyert and Ashley Vande Stouwe each had six kills and Morgan Whitehead had five to give the Mustangs a balanced attack.

Mustang libero Nikki Oberfoell dug up 18 balls and Morgan Gourley just missed double figures with nine digs.

Callie Alberico had seven digs to go along with match-high totals of 19 assists and two ace serves. Gabby Roe was right behind with 17 assists.

Buyert paced the Mustangs’ front line defense with one solo block and six block assists.
