Morningside’s volleyball team continued its early season success when the Mustangs swept visiting Dakota Wesleyan 25-12, 25-20, 25-21 in Wednesday’s GPAC opener in the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.

The Mustangs improved their record to 6-1 to move within two wins of their entire victory output from last season’s 8-20 campaign.

Morningside displayed a consistent attack against the Tigers. The Mustangs finished with a .286 hitting percentage and attacked at a .278 clip or higher in each of the three sets, including a .300 rate when they routed the Tigers 25-12 in the first set.

Jenn Buyert, Brittni Olson, and Ashley Vande Stouwe each slammed eight kills to pace the Mustangs’ attack. Jayde Bergmann was right behind with six kills, followed by Emma Gerber with five and Morgan Whitehead with four.

The freshman Olson, a first-team Class 3A all-stater last year at Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School, had a near perfect performance. Olson went through the match without an attack error and eight of her 11 attempts resulted in kills for a .727 hitting percentage. Vande Stouwe attacked at a .353 clip and Whitehead was at .333.

Mustang setters Taylor Ferguson and Callie Alberico dealt 18 and 12 assists, respectively, while Mustang libero Nikki Oberfoell had six assists to go along with a match-high 16 digs.

Morgan Gourley also gave the Mustangs a double figure dig performance with 10, followed by Katie Kuck with seven.

Olson led the Mustangs’ blocking effort at the net with one solo block and five block assists. Vande Stouwe also had five block assists, while Bergmann and Buyert each had four.

Morningside will compete in the College of Saint Mary Tournament on Friday and Saturday, starting with a 12:30 p.m. match against Valley City State on Friday.
