Morningside’s volleyball team gave nationally ranked Dordt all it could handle in a 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 GPAC setback on Tuesday in Sioux City.

The Defenders, ranked 11th in the latest NAIA Volleyball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, improved their record to 14-5 and climbed to 7-2 in the GPAC for a share of third place in the league standings. The setback dropped the Mustangs to 14-9 overall and 5-5 in the league.

Morningside held its own with the Defenders at the net. The Mustangs finished with a .212 hitting percentage, which was just under the .214 attack rate for the guests.

Brittni Olson hammered 18 kills to share match honors with the Defenders’ Brooke Granstra. Olson had only three errors in 41 attack attempts en route to a .366 hitting percentage.

The Mustangs’ attack also received big efforts from Jayde Bergmann with 13 kills and a .308 hitting percentage and Emma Gerber with 11 kills and no errors in 26 attack attempts for a team-high .423 hitting percentage.

Ashley Vande Stouwe just missed double figures with nine kills.

Aside from contributing double figure kill totals to the Mustangs’ offensive attack, Olson and Gerber each had eight block assists to lead the hosts defensive effort at the net. The eight block assists by Gerber was her top effort so far this season.

Nikki Oberfoell came up with a match-high 19 digs to lead a group of four Mustangs in double figures. Katie Kuck and Morgan Gourley each had 13 digs, while Callie Alberico had 10.

Gabby Roe had seven digs to go along with a team-high 24 assists. Alberico was right behind with 23 assists and the Mustangs’ only ace serve of the match.

Morningside will travel to North Dakota for matches at Mayville State on Thursday and Valley City State on Friday.
