North Bend Central sweeps Howells-Dodge

North Bend-Fresh off their East Husker Conference Tournament Championship, the North Bend Central Volleyball team beat Howells-Dodge in straight sets at home Tuesday night, winning set one 25-20, set two 25-21, and set three 25-14.

North Bend Central Head Coach Amy Sterup says her team showed no ill effects from Saturday’s Championship.

“We did alright. Coming off of the Conference Tournament they were tired in practice so I was a little worried, but they came out and played their game and they did alright.”

Kristin Lux paced the Tigers (22-2) with 18 kills. Brooke Fredrickson added 15 while Jacki Minarick totaled 9.

Howells-Dodge Head Coach Neil VanLengen says he was proud of the way his team played.

“Oh I just told my team you guys for 2 1/2 sets we played outstanding. I mean you put that team in C-2 that’s the state champs hands down. I mean there’s nobody in C-2 that can play with them. So they got a little tougher draw in C-1, but man we play the way we did I like our chances. We are going to do very well.”

Kalli Brester notched 16 kills for the Jaguars (21-5) while Sam Brester and Erin Prusa registered 9 and 8, respectively.

VanLengen says his team’s play was a lot better Tuesday night than it was on Saturday.

“Saturday we just weren’t quite ourselves. Kind of had a chance to beat Stanton, and let them get away with one. And then we just weren’t ready to play the third place game. And so I just told them hey we got to get rid of that, and be ready to go. And we were. Man to me for 2 1/2 sets that’s as good of Volleyball you’re going to see around here anyway man. Just two heavyweight teams just slugging it out. Shoot first set we had 16 side outs, second set I think we had 14 or 15 side outs. I mean that’s outstanding Volleyball really.”

The Jaguars are back in action Thursday, battling Tekamah-Herman on the road in a match that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull beginning at 7:15 p.m.

North Bend Central is off until next Tuesday when they host Stanton and Logan View in a Triangular.
