Northeast Baseball splits Doubleheader with North Iowa Area

YANKTON, S.D. – The Northeast Community College baseball team only had two hits in the first game of a doubleheader against North Iowa Area Community College on Tuesday, but it just was enough as the Hawks downed the Trojans 3-1 before falling in the final game of the day 5-1 in ICCAC action at Riverside Field in Yankton, S.D.

The Hawks (9-7, 2-2 ICCAC) took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before adding three more in the bottom of the fourth when Spencer Weber (Bennington, Neb.) singled to center field.

Alex Potter (Parker, Colo.) came in to close the door on the Trojans to pick-up his fourth save of the season, tossing two and one-third innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out three batters.

Drew Smith (Elkhorn, Neb.) added the other hit for the Hawks and an RBI.

In the final game of the doubleheader, the Hawks were unable to produce any offense until the bottom of the seventh. NIACC built up a 4-0 lead and added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.

Christian Dumont (Bellevue, Neb.) went 2-for-4 at the plate with two stolen bases and an RBI. Smith added two hits, two stolen bases including a double and a walk.

Cade Halvorson (Fruita, Colo.) took the loss on the mound after throwing three and one-third innings, giving up two earned runs off one hit. Sebastian Rodriguez (Cayey, Puerto Rico) threw five innings in relief, allowing no earned runs, while walking two batters and striking out two.

The Hawks head back to Yankton Wednesday to face Mount Marty College JV for a seven-inning game at 5 p.m.
