Northeast men’s soccer outlasts Central

NORFOLK – The Northeast Community College men’s soccer team defeated Central Community College, 4-2, in a physical game played here Monday night.

Northeast played a strong first half by controlling possession of the ball and creating numerous scoring opportunities that gave them a 2-0 lead at the half. Daniel Isaza, with an assist by Roberlando Morfi, scored in the 26th minute, and Isaza netted an unassisted goal in the 42nd minute.

The Hawks struggled at the start of the second half, giving Central back-to-back goals in the 46th and 48th minutes. But they regrouped, with Oscar Urguidez netting a goal in the 70th minute with assists from Morfi and Julio Perez, and Isaza scoring another unassisted goal in the 89th minute.

“We showed some maturity tonight by not letting our two mistakes distract us from the style of play we had used to build the lead,” said Northeast Coach Doug Seigle. “A few weeks ago, I am not sure if we would have showed the composure we did today in regrouping during the flow of the game and coming back after such a letdown. I am proud of how we played today but know that we have to get back to work tomorrow.”

Northeast outshot Central 12-7, and also had more shots on goal, with eight to Central’s five. The Hawks recorded seven corner kicks, while Central had two. Troy Elliott recorded three saves for Northeast.

The Hawks (3-10) are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Rosemount, Minnesota, to challenge Dakota County Technical College in a 2 p.m. game.
