NORFOLK – The Northeast Community College women’s volleyball team defeated Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) here Wednesday in five sets.
The Hawks prevailed over DMACC in the first two sets, winning 25-19 and 25-23. DMACC answered in the next two sets, defeating Northeast 25-22 and 25-20. Northeast, after being down 10-7 in the final set, took the win, 21-19.
“Playing DMACC is always tough, and our girls came out strong in the first two sets,” said Northeast Coach Amanda Schultze. “The third and fourth sets, we played safe and just fell short. The girls played hard and fought back in that fifth set and were able to come out with the win.”
“I’m very happy with how the girls played and reacted after being down 10-7 in the fifth.”
Courtni Kunz and Tabitha Kander led Northeast in kills with 19 and 15, respectively. Kelsey Shoemaker added two solo and two assist blocks, while Caitlin McLouth had one solo block and three assist blocks. Kander led ace serves with two and also had 21 digs.
Mackenzie Wecker finished with a team-high 58 digs, while Monique Schafer had 26, and Kander, 21. Courtney Labenz had 25 assists for the night.
Northeast next hosts the Northeast Tournament on Friday and Saturday. They face Lake Region State College at 1 p.m. and North Dakota State College at 7 p.m on Friday. On Saturday, they square off against Fort Scott Community College at 11 a.m. and Marshalltown at 5 p.m. All games will be played at the Cox Activities Center on the Norfolk campus.
