Northwestern Takes Series Finale From Mavericks

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Omaha baseball team dropped its weekend series finale with Northwestern Sunday afternoon, 3-1 at Camelback Ranch. The Mavericks are now 2-1 (0-0 Summit League) after the opening weekend of play, while the Wildcats are 1-2 (0-0 Big Ten).

Omaha was limited to five singles for the day, with one apiece from Cole ThibodeauBraden RogersBen PalenskyParker Smejkal and Max Gamm. Rogers scored the Mavericks’ only run of the day.

Quinn Lavelle (1-0) earned the win for NU, throwing 5.0 shutout innings with three hits, a walk and five strikeouts. Right-hander Joey Machado (0-1) took the loss, surrendering two runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts in his first career start and first collegiate appearance. Josh Levy (1) picked up the save.

Northwestern was led by Ben Dickey’s 2-for-4 day at the plate, while David Dunn was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs driven in. Connor Lind scored twice and was 1-for-3.

After a scoreless three innings, the Wildcats struck first for a pair in the fourth with RBI groundouts from Dunn and Jack Kelly. They added another run in the sixth when Lind doubled and later scored on Dunn’s second RBI groundout.

Omaha rallied in the ninth, with Rogers leading off with a bloop single to right. Keil Krumwiede then worked a 3-1 walk to put two runners on with no outs, and two batters later, the duo moved into scoring position. Rogers promptly scored on a wild pitch, trimming the lead to 3-1. The Mavericks then loaded the bases and had the tying run on after Caniglia was hit by a pitch and Smejkal drew a full-count walk, but NU got out of it with a flyout to close the game.

Omaha returns to action next weekend with a three-game series at Wichita State, Feb. 23-25. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m. at Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kan.
