INSIDE THE INNINGS
The Mavericks fell into an early deficit in the bottom of the first and could not overcome the hole. Wichita State opened the inning with a double and put the next runner on after he was hit by a pitch. The first Shocker run came in as the baserunner came from third and beat Eckhout’s throw to home. The Shockers then loaded the bases and cracked a two-RBI single that made it 3-0. The fourth run came unearned on a groundout to Braden Rogers that scored the runner from third.
The Shockers’ lead extended to 6-0 on a two-run homer to right field.
Eckhout vaulted a solo-shot homer leading off in the top of the third. The junior transfer recorded his first-career home run as a Maverick when he blasted one over the left field wall. The next Maverick run came after Matt Bondarchuk beat the throw to first on a bunt. He then stole second and was brought home by a single-RBI from Rogers.
Later on in the inning, Ben Palensky was walked to load the bases for the Mavericks, but a ground out left all three runners stranded.
The next run would not come until the bottom of the seventh, when the Shockers hit one out of the park to deep left field and went up 7-2. Another Shocker run came on an Omaha error that scored the team’s eighth. The ninth run came unearned on a ground out in the bottom of the eighth. Wichita’s 10th run came on a sacrifice fly and the final two runs for the Shockers came on a two-shot homer over left.
