Omaha Softball announces 2018 Schedule

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha softball program has released its 2018 schedule, head coach DJ Sanchez announced Monday.

The Mavericks’ regular-season schedule includes 54 games.  Omaha will play eight games at Westside Field at Westbrook this season, including non-conference games against Nebraska and Wichita State.

UNO opens the 2018 season with five games at the Bulldog Kickoff Classic in Starkville, Miss., Feb. 9-11.  Omaha has a midweek doubleheader against Southern University (Feb. 14), before heading to Hammond, La. and the Lion Classic II (Feb. 16-18).

Omaha heads south to Corpus Christi, Texas for five games at the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Tournament (Feb. 23-25).  The Mavericks hit the road for five games at the Mizuno Classic in Stillwater, Okla. (March 2-4).

UNO visits Coppin State (March 7) for a midweek twin bill, before playing in the Hampton University Tournament in Hampton, Va. (March9-11).

The Mavericks make their home debut with a single game against Nebraska at Westside Field at Westbrook on March 13.  The final regular-season tournament for the Mavericks will take place in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Wooo Pig Classic (March 16-18).

Omaha opens a seven-game homestand starting with a midweek game on March 20 against Wichita State.  The Mavericks begin Summit League play with a three-game series against South Dakota (Mach 24-25).  UNO then wraps up the home portion of its schedule with a three-game set versus South Dakota State (March 30-31).

The Mavericks play their first conference road series at North Dakota State (April 7-8), before visiting Missouri for a midweek game (April 11).  Omaha then visits crosstown rival Creighton (April 18).

Omaha next visits Western Illinois for a three-game set (April 21-22).  The Mavericks go to Kansas for a midweek game against the Jayhawks (April 25).  The final series of the season is a conference affair as Omaha visits Fort Wayne for a three-game set (May 4-5).

The Summit League Championship is set for May 9-12 at the Ellig Sports Complex in Fargo, N.D.

Over the regular-season, Omaha will play in 13 states against schools from 15 other Division I conferences.  The schedule has three opponents from the Big 12, SEC and SWAC; two from the American Athletic Conference, America East, MEAC and Southland; and one each from the Atlantic 10, Big 10, Big East, Horizon, Missouri Valley, Mountain West, Northeast, and Ohio Valley.

“We are looking forward to being challenged this spring,” Sanchez said.  “This group has worked extremely hard since August, and I am excited to see that work pay off in February.”
