VERMILLION, S.D. – The Omaha softball team lost a 9-1 decision in six innings to South Dakota at Nygaard Field on Sunday.
The Mavericks are now 3-33 overall and 1-8 in Summit League play, while the Coyotes improved to 25-18 (8-1).

Lexi Burchfield and Lexi Burkhardt each had singles to lead the Mavericks.  Hailey Bartz drew a walk and scored, while Janae Cameron drove in Omaha’s lone run.

Dustie Durham went 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Coyotes.  Alyssa Fernandez finished 2-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBI.

Omaha starter Halley Jones (0-9) allowed seven runs on six hits and a walk in 1.1 innings of work.  Sydney Hampton and Ryanne Millington allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks over the final 3.2 innings.  South Dakota starter Alexis Devers (10-9) allowed one run on one hit and two walks with three strikeouts.  Durham allowed one hit over the final 2.0 innings.

Durham put South Dakota in front 2-0 with a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the first.  The Coyotes added five runs on five hits to increase the lead to 7-0 after two innings.

Omaha loaded the bases in the top of the third thanks to a pair of walks and a hit batsman.  Bartz scored on Cameron’s RBI ground out to cut the lead to 7-1.

Two hits and an Omaha error led to another South Dakota run in the fourth inning.  In the bottom of the sixth, Jamie Holscher’s RBI double ended the game due to the run rule.

Omaha returns to action next weekend with a three-game series at Purdue Fort Wayne.  The Mavericks play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13, starting at 11 a.m. followed by a single game on Sunday at 10 a.m.
