Omaha Softball loses twice on final day of Highlander Classic

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Omaha softball team lost a pair of games on the final day of the Highlander Classic at Harrison Field.  The Mavericks lost 6-0 to Houston in the opener before falling 9-6 to tournament host UC Riverside.

Leaders for Omaha
Emma Dargy and Alexa Sedlak each hit .500 on the day to lead the Mavericks at the plate.  Dargy went 2-for-4 with two walks, a double and a run scored.  Sedlak went 3-for-6 at the plate with a double and an RBI.

Hailey Bartz added a 1-for-3 effort with a stolen base.  Savannah Fisher went 2-for-7 at the plate with an RBI.

Houston 6, Omaha 0
Arielle James put Houston on top when she led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to left field.

Omaha looked to answer in the top of the third as the Mavericks put runners on first and second with two outs.  Houston starter Trystan Melancon (4-1) induced a ground out to end the UNO threat.  Omaha threatened again in the top of the fourth as Sedlak led off with a double and moved to third on a Bartz single.  Melancon wiggled out of trouble again with a strikeout.

The Cougars added three runs in the bottom of the fourth on two walks, an error, a passed ball and a triple to move in front 4-0.  Houston tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning on two hits, a walk and a wild pitch.  Melancon retired nine of the final 10 batters she faced to secure the 6-0 victory.

UC Riverside 9, Omaha 6
Omaha’s first seven batters reached to open the game.  Dargy opened the game with a double to center and scored on Sedlak’s RBI single.  Jamie White and Lexi Burkhardt each singled to load the bases with no outs.  Fisher laced a single down the right field line to drive in Sedlak, but White was thrown out at the plate.

Following a pitching change, Faith Romero walked to load the bases again.  Errors on back-to-back plays allowed two more runs to cross the plate and put runners on first and third.  Omaha made it 6-0 as Lauren Lauvetz crossed the plate before Emily Klosterman was thrown out at second.

UC Riverside cut into Omaha’s lead in the bottom half of the inning.  Melanie Olmos hit a two-run home run with two outs that made it 6-2.

The Mavericks looked to add to their advantage in the top of the second by putting runners on second and third with two outs.  Highlander relief pitcher Haley Marschall ended the inning with a ground ball.

UC Riverside added three runs on two hits and two walks in the bottom of the second to cut Omaha’s lead to 6-5.  The Highlanders took the lead in the bottom of the fifth by scoring three runs, and added one more in the sixth to make the final 9-6.
