Omaha Softball Splits at Day 2 of Bulldogs Kickoff Classic

Omaha Softball Splits at Day 2 of Bulldogs Kickoff Classic

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Omaha softball team split a pair of games on the final day of the Bulldog Kickoff Classic with a 16-2 (5 innings) loss to Missouri State, followed by a 2-1 win over Mississippi Valley State.

The Mavericks trailed early and could not recover in the day two opener against Missouri State.

Hailey BartzAubrey HackeNatalie Mostek and Jessica Nelson each had hits for UNO.  Mostek hit her first career home run in an Omaha uniform in the bottom of the fourth.

Hacke (0-1) tossed 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Sydney Hampton pitched 1.1 innings, allowing nine runs (five earned) on six hits and a walk with two punch-outs.  Missouri State’s Holly Kelley pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts.

UNO fell behind, 14-0, through the first two innings, but got on the board in the bottom of the second behind a two-out single from Hacke.

The inning started with a one-out walk to Lexi Burchfield, and with two outs moved to second on a single from Hailey Bartz.  Hack then singled allowing Burchfield to score.

MSU responded with a run in the top of the fourth, before Mostek led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to center.

The Bears added a run in the top of the fifth to earn the five-inning win.

Sydney Hampton (2-0) earned the win, holding MVSU to one run on six hits and two walks while striking out seven over 7.0 innings.  The loss went to Alejandra Salazar (0-2), who gave up two runs on five hits and 10 walks with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.

Jessica Nelson led Omaha offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with a triple and a walk.  Hampton went 1-for-1 at the dish with an RBI and two walks.  Natalie Mostek went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Crystal Pablo went 1-for-4.

Mississippi Valley State took an early 1-0 lead on Ikeyia Alexander’s solo home run to center.

Omaha took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Mostek belted a one-out double to center field and then advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Emma Dargy drew a walk and then was caught stealing, but Mostek was able to score to tie things up on the play.  Emily Klosterman worked a two-out walk and then stole second. Klosterman stole second and came around to score on Hampton single up the middle.

Hampton retired nine of the next 11 batters to secure the win for Omaha.

Omaha heads south next week for six games.  The Mavericks visit Southern University for a single game on Wednesday, Feb. 14, before playing five games at the Lion Classic II Tournament hosted by Southeastern Louisiana.
